IMPORTANT: Giving name and address under Section 60
Monday, July 4th, 2005
Police are insisting that people provide their names and addresses under Section 60. As the bust card says, you do not have to tell the police your name and address unless they reasonably suspect you of committing or witnessing an offence. However, everyone should be aware that the during the actions on Monday 4th July, the police are detaining/arresting people for not giving their name and address, claiming that Section 60 allows them to do so. If you are asked for your name and address by a police officer, our advice is to ask if you have to give it and if so, why (i.e. they should tell you what offence they suspect you of or that you may have witnessed)? If they then insist, you will have to make an personal choice about whether you are prepared to provide your name and address. Of course, this is no guarantee that you will NOT be detained/arrested.
