CALL PRISONER SUPPORT at 079 14 79 57 37 to find out if your friend is on remand

The police detain people and can hold them for a limited time in a police station. Then they are brought to court for a hearing. The magistrate (low level judge) either decides to release them without charges or decides to charge them. If the latter is the case s/he can either decide to give bail (which means they get released under special restrictions until their trial) or to keep people on remand, which means that people are brought to prisons and held there until their trial.

At the moment different prisons in Scotland are used for helding protestors on remand.

If you know that your friend is being held on remand, there are different things you can do to support her/him:

Write letters, visit her/him (normally once per day), get money in so s/he can buy stuff inside the prison and make phonecalls…

Every prison has different rules and regulations on that. Following you find specific information for the different prisons.
