19:30 Arrest & Defendants Update

Thursday, July 7th, 2005

Approximately 300 people were detained or arrested on Wednesday 6th July in a variety of places. However, please remember that under Scottish Law the police can detain people for up to 6 hours without arresting them. Even after arrest charges may be dropped and this has happened in a number of cases. About 150 people appeared in Court. Most people are being bailed, although there is a problem for some people with addresses abroad. Less than 30 people are currently detained in custody and we are working with solicitors to try and get them bailed. If you live in Scotland and you would be able to provide accommodation, even for only a short while, to anyone arrested, then please contact us urgently as having somewhere to stay may mean the difference between bail and prison in the short term.
